Tips On Pomeranian Grooming

If you have been thinking about getting a Pomeranian puppy, you will have to learn about Pomeranian grooming. These types of dogs have long, soft hair that requires a lot of attention. Their overall health and comfort depends on making sure that they are properly taken care of. Since these dogs are smaller and are closer to the ground, there are many problems that can occur and Pomeranian grooming can help considerably.

Pomeranians are a good choice for people who do not want a bigger type of dog. They are intelligent and friendly and open to learning. They come in a variety of colors and they include red, white, tan and even black. While raising these pups, they should be taught to only bark a few times at an intruder or someone they do not know. If they are allowed to freely bark as much as they want, it can become a problem. They make great watchdogs and can scare off any intruder but without some kind of training when it comes to barking, the habit can become very irritating.

Pomeranians can grow up to 12 inches in height and can be as heavy as 7 pounds. They are perfect for people who live in a smaller dwelling like and apartment and they do not need a big area to walk around in. But they should occasionally be treated to a long walk for overall health. Since their health depends on good Pomeranian grooming, there are a few things to remember about grooming these little animals.

A Pomeranian puppy is small and fragile. So, if you are purchasing one of these tiny puppies the first thing you can do is to make sure they have been seen by a veterinarian. He can assess if they need certain shots of any other kind of care at this young age. They can become cold or overheated fast, so you should wait at least a few weeks to give it a bath. You can begin to brush the tiny dog.

Pomeranian grooming can begin at an early age. These pups need to be brushed a few times a week. This helps to remove matting and tangles from the dog’s longer hair. Begin at the head and work down to the back end of the puppy. The Pomeranian has an under coating of hair that it sheds twice a year. It also sheds its longer hair, so the brushing helps with this process.

Part of the Pomeranian grooming consists of keeping the puppy’s teeth clean. These dogs have a tendency to lose teeth easily to decay and rotting. You can give the pup snacks occasionally but the diet must consist of hard crunchy food, so that the teeth can be cleaned while eating.

Since these dogs are so close to the ground, the hair might become matted and unmanageable. During the summer months they may become infested with fleas or ticks. This can be a huge problem because of the amount of hair. It may be a good idea to trim or shave the animal if you cannot get all of the tangles out. The early summer may be the perfect time to do this because the hair can fully grow back by the start of the winter. You may also want to keep the dog's hair trimmed around the anus. During elimination the bowel movement may cover the dog's hair. This is unsightly and not very healthy for the dog.

Make sure to check the dog's eyes and ears for any sign of infection. Pomeranian's can have problems with ear mites and they may be hard to notice because of the length of the hair. The hair can also block the vision of the dog and cause watering and discharge from the eye area. You can avoid this by keeping the hair trimmed in those specific areas.
